"Halloween", the 1978 independent horror film directed by John Carpenter, written by Debra Hill, that was made for a few hundred thousand dollars, and returned over the years more than 200 million. So low was the budget that the cast had to help with set decoration whitewashing the spookiest house. "Halloween" was the first and best in a series of so-called slasher films when knife-wielding maniacs pray on teenagers usually female.
