While in 2013, Zheng has captained the Guangzhou Evergrande to a third successive Chinese title and the Asian Champions League title the first time that a Chinese club has won that. Zheng, who's a defensive midfielder has stood out in a team known for its attacking South American flair. And in his victory speech, he thanked Guangzhou's World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi for showing him what it is to become a champion.
This is the first time that a Chinese player has captured this award whilst playing for a Chinese club. How significant is that?
Yes, China's legendary captain Fan Zhiyi won this award in 2001 after he led China to their inaugural World Cup appearance, but it is historic for the reasons that you say. But I would say that it shows more the strength of Guangzhou Evergrande than it does the Chinese League. Zheng joined them just after they'd been demoted to the second tier for match-fixing and has been there throughout all of their recent successes.
