http://t1.g.hjfile.cn/listen/201311/201311270748278322920.mp3Now it's that time of the year what's with Christmas around the corner and many of us will be turning to Google and its search engine to help us find presents online. But according to Richard Waters, San Francisco correspondent of the Financial Times, you may end up paying over the odds if you click on the first thing that shows up on a Google search. The FT did its own research in the US on this and Richard Waters told me what he'd found.
Well, we looked into a new format that Google has for showing products on its search engine when you search for something you might want to buy. So if you, for instance, wanted to buy a camera and you typed that into the Google search box, Google would return you now a panel with pictures of cameras sold by various merchants, showing the prices and the merchants in a picture. However, it turns out that when you click on these things and go through to buy, at least in the US, you're often paying, in fact, nearly always paying substantially more than you would. If you went elsewhere in Google, if you went to the Google shopping service, which is a comparison shopping engine and you typed in the same product and looked around, you'd find the merchants selling it a lot cheaper.
