But such calm must have been a rarity in the life of Johannes Vermeer. He lived a life of hectic poverty, unable even to afford the fees due for his apprenticeship as an artist, in 1653. That same year when he was 21 years old, Vermeer was married to Catharina Bolnes, but the couple were so poor they couldn't afford to set up their own home.
