And, hence, its position within the Rijksmuseum. To some degree the whole Rijksmuseum is built around The Night Watch. And they created a huge mythology around the figure of Rembrandt. And in a way, you see that then in the Rijksmuseum, the architecture of the Rijksmuseum, the way that The Night Watch, taken to be the greatest picture by the great iconic artist of The Netherlands, was placed, as it were, in the inner sanctum. The great altarpiece on the great altar of Dutch nationalism.
As the Night Watch was given its place of honour, the Dutch began to worry about something.
