But whatever the realities of the matter, The Day Watch doesn't have quite the same ring, and a proposal to call it March of Soldiers of the Civic Guard fell understandably flat. So The Night Watch it's remained.
The painting was moved to its present home, and to a new level of fame, when the Rijksmuseum building was opened in 1885. Its architect, Pierre Cuypers, wanted to create a great temple for the whole of Dutch art and history.
The facade of the museum, bearing the names of Dutch towns and cities, and busts of Dutch artists, shows this.
And at the very heart of the new building Cuypers placed The Night Watch.
