http://t1.g.hjfile.cn/listen/201309/201309240606335068323.mp3It's the 18th of September, 2001. And in Trenton, New Jersey, someone has just posted letters to prominent media organisations, folded inside the potentially lethal biological agent Anthrax.
Anthrax, a terrorist threat or a figment of our fears?
This is NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.
Good evening. Tonight we find ourselves in the unusual and unhappy position of reporting on one of our beloved colleagues who has contracted a cutaneous Anthrax infection.
Postal workers at a number of TV stations and newspapers have been taken ill. It's just weeks after 9/11 and the nation is already in a profound state of shock. These latest attacks have a new psychological impact. Special Agent Scott Stanley of the FBI was one of the first on the scene after the attack on the Pentagon. He's been redeployed to solve the Anthrax case.
The fear was palpable. On 9/11, you had planes coming down, you had fixed crime scenes. This was very spurious. There was anthrax spread throughout the mail system in multiple cities. Nobody knew where it was coming from or how it was gonna turn out.
Anthrax is a potentially deadly disease that's caused by a bacteria. Occasionally it is found in nature but the strain found in the letters is the Ames strain developed by the US military after the Second World War to research biological weapons and shared with only a few close allies. The FBI already suspects that this is a deliberate biological attack.2001年9月18日在美国新泽西州的特伦顿,有人将含有致命炭疽病菌的信件寄往各大知名新闻机构。
