But the next award that Sting has in his sights is a Tony, as his latest project takes him into new territory. He's written a musical called "The Last Ship", which he aims to bring to a Broadway theatre next year. In the meantime, he's releasing 12 of the songs as an album. Working with John Logan, who wrote screenplays for Skyfall and Gladiator, Sting has drawn on memories of his Tyneside childhood, to tell the story of the closure of the Swan Hunter shipyards. When he came to the Front Row studio with his band, he told me why.
Well, it's set in my hometown on North Tyneside, Wallsend, where we built the largest ships ever constructed on planet Earth. And that was right at the end of my street. So my earliest memories are of these massive ships in the surreal industrial environment and then we watched the things launched. If you ever see a ship launch, it's the most apocalyptic event, the noise and you'll never see anything that big move ever. And it was a huge memory for me. Of course that the industry closed down in the 80s and the 90s and there's nothing there but a hole on the ground.
