After six years of Labor leadership marked by relatively calm economic times, but fractious political infighting, the conservative Liberal-National party coalition is taking back the reigns of power. It's just a matter of weeks since Kevin Rudd replaced Julia Gillard as Labor leader in an internal party coup for what's turned out to be a very brief second stint as prime minister. As he conceded defeat in the election, Mr Rudd accepted his share of the blame.
"I know that Labor hearts are heavy across the nation tonight, and as your prime minister and as your parliamentary leader of the great Australian Labor party, I accept responsibility. I gave it my all, but it was not enough for us to win."
Shortly afterwards the man who did do enough to win the leader of the Liberal-National party coalition, Tony Abbott, savoured his triumph, making the kind of inclusive noises that political victors tend to make.
"A good government, a good government is one that governs for all Australians, including those who haven't voted for it. A good government is one with a duty to help everyone to maximise his or her potential - Indigenous people, people with disabilities and our forgotten families as well as those who Menzies described as lifters not leaners.
