Today America's ambassador to Moscow met Russia's deputy foreign minister to try to argue Washington's case. But the Russian authorities made it clear that any US military action against Syria bypassing the UN Security Council would be seen as an act of aggression.
President Obama, though, has said he's considering military action. Our defence and diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus gave us more details about any possible targets and when they might be hit.
Of course it looks as though the United States is largely in this on its own. There's a debate as to whether the French might be involved too. But since this is essentially a US operation, it means that the timetable could be set by the White House. All the evidence yesterday from Secretary Kerry from Mr Obama himself was that could be imminent.
