It's a bit like a cross between the London underground and a giant gun. It involves firing a tube-shaped carriage full of people along a tunnel at twice the speed of an aeroplane. Well, it'd run between the US cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, slashing journey times from the five hours it takes to drive it today down to just 30 minutes. And it's the brainchild of the American inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk. He's the guy who invented the Paypal, cash transfer website, the rocket company SpaceX and the flashy electric sports car Tesla. Well, our science correspondent Jonathan Amos is here to tell us a bit more about it. So Jonathan, is this a serious idea then or just science fantasy?
Well, I think the first thing we have to say, Rob, is we don't know because we don't really know what the details are. Elon Musk's been teasing people over the past, well, few months really about what this idea would be. He calls it Hyperloop. It's something that he's come up with because he's looked at the high-speed rail project that's been proposed for California and says he's underwhelmed by it all because it's gonna take a very circuitous route.
