Sansepolcro which in English means Holy Sepulchre is said to have been founded in the 10th century by two pilgrims who returned here from Jerusalem with precious relics from Christ's tomb. And so for a thousand years the people have associated their city with the resurrection story. Today the masterpiece holds such enormous significance for Sansepolcro that the painting is permanently on show. through a strategically placed window built into the museum wall. The Resurrection is, in effect, the city logo and appears on all the official regalia.
