Every year the winning entries are reproduced by countless newspapers and magazines and draw thousands of people to an exhibition here at the museum. I met Mark for a last look at the pictures before the exhibition opened to the public.
These pictures are absolutely incredible, aren't they?
They are gorgeous. There's so many great ones.
There is, I mean, as a judge, how many do you have to sift through? How many individual photographs?
A lot, we had 43,135 entries this year, and from 94 different countries, hundreds of different photographers.
So something like this leopard here, what would you be looking for here?
You know, there're so many pictures of leopards out there.
Yeah.
To have a leopard shot that stops you in your tracks. So when you're looking at one picture after another in a judging process, you know, they're all projected on a screen. It's got to be really really good to actually make you think, "Wow, that really is different." And this is a nice, simple photograph, but you've got gorgeous light. You've got fantastic eye contact and what really makes it is this is wonderful frame all the way around the leopard, just sets it, makes it stand out from the background.

有许多参赛者都拍了猎豹，但要让评委驻足，很不容易。我们是一张一张浏览的，照片逐一被投射在屏幕上。只有非常优秀的作品，才会让你觉得"哇这张真不一般"。这是张照片柔和而简单，但是光线非常漂亮。猎豹眼神直视镜头，而真的造就它的是这围绕着猎豹的柔美背景，让它从背景中凸显出来。我感觉它看穿了我的内心，绿洲中的眼睛。
