"There has been a big power failure in Quebec. Most of the province is in darkness, including much of Montreal and Quebec City."
Nobody knew why the lights went out, and it was nine hours before most power supplies were restored. Some areas were left dark for days. This was the second time in less than a year that the grid had come down, and people were outraged.
"Well I think it's becoming a little bit ridiculous right now."
"It's a nonsense what they're doing, you know? They make us pay a lot of money, and they can't give united population a good service."
But this time it wasn't icy weather here on Earth that caused equipment failures. The culprit was 150 million kilometres away - the Sun, as Judith Hann reported on Tomorrow's World.
"It's now become clear that the aurora borealis displays in England we reported last week was a result of what was probably this century's most intense magnetic storm, and it disrupted activity across the globe. North Sea oil drilling stopped because of the danger of mistakenly drilling into an existing oil field. And in space, the sharp increase in radiation may have caused the computer malfunction that forced the shuttle Discovery to return to Earth earlier than planned."1989年3月13日，加拿大有六百万人迎来了没有电力的一天。
