It is almost easier to list what it did not change than what it did. The apostles are on their feet, they are gesturing, their hands almost as animated as their faces. At the centre, Christ, rather than being hemmed in as before, sits alone and vulnerable. Bartholomew, at the left, rises up to his full height, the only figure entirely visible. Thomas, on the other hand, is represented in four tiny parts two hands, a head, and originally a foot. At the right, Matthew faces away from the scene's core, but sweeps the gaze back with his arms, arranged as if playing a musical instrument.
