We'd known of his adventures with cocoa on the Caribbean island of Grenada for a number of years and his latest project - sailing 50,000 chocolate bars across the Atlantic using only wind and solar energy - was to be a fun and dramatic story to share. In fact, Mott Green had already shaken up the chocolate world with what seemed like a simple idea - the cocoa farmers could also be the chocolate makers, that the people who grew the beans could also be the main beneficiaries when we buy the bar. It sounds simple but it was in fact a revolutionary idea and an incredible feat of engineering. And so it was a story we were keen to tell on the Food Programme. But as our recordings were coming to a close last month, news came in from Grenada that Mott Green, one of the world's most extraordinary and unlikely cocoa farmers and chocolate pioneers had been killed. There had been an accident while he was repairing some equipment. And so this programme is his chocolate story.
You can see where the dream came from - their love with cocoa, love withGrenada, Grenadians, engineering, a student dropout that loves to build contraptions. So I developed this dream.
