Over the past two years thousands of Syrians have crossed into Greece illegally in a bid to rebuild their lives there or in other countries of the European Union. They're being detained and nearly all of those who've applied have been refused political asylum. Nonetheless, Syrians continue to risk their lives on the journey as Sue Lloyd-Roberts reports.
From the northern border of their country, Syrian refugees cross into Turkey and make their way to the western Mediterranean coast. It's here that they entrust themselves to the people smugglers who put them in small boats for the 12-kilometre crossing to the nearest Greek island Lesbos. Dasîn is head of the Kurdish community in Izmir in Turkey.
The smugglers don't care. They put women and kids below the deck and locked it. It was a small boat, built for 20 people, yet they put 110 people in it.
