Oil and gas account for more than 80% of its annual economic output and for almost all of Libya's export revenues. That means, of course, it's done very well out of the recent high oil price. But it also leaves Libya very vulnerable. Oil prices, as we well know, fluctuate sharply. So what else does the economy there have to offer? Rana Jawad reports from Tripoli.
"When Libya's security problems dominate the headlines, it's easy to overlook that its economy is actually functioning. The Libyan may have bucked the economic stagnation trend in post-Arab Spring countries chiefly because of its oil industry and exports rapidly returning to pre-war levels. There are other projects flourishing or waiting patiently for an opportunity to materialise. The recent Libya Build fair, coined by one of its organisers Harrick Blavy as the country's biggest event ever, is a good case in point. Its 2,000 square metres of exhibiting area at the sports arena overflowed with stores from 714 companies from more than two dozen countries."
