I believe such thefts were quite normal in those times, especially when the Medici were concerned. After all, you don't become the ruling family in a city like Florence by being fair to everybody and over scrupulous. Machiavelli would have approved of that.
In 1495, Damiano Bartolini Salimbeni began legal proceedings to recover his paintings. He won the case, but failed to reclaim the panels which were to remain Medici property for centuries. Time meanwhile was dimming the panels' fame. inventory makers were no longer sure what the scenes depicted. Some said ancient battles in period armour. Others said jousts.
