Now normally economists assume these effects will be reversed as the economy recovers, but it now seems the consequences of periods of economic stress can be with us for many years. Fresh recent research shows that the long-term ramifications of a downturn or a recession on us as individuals can be felt for decades. Ulrike Malmendier is professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley. She's been looking into just how great the psychological scar left by prolonged economic decline or stagnation can be, and how it can then affect consumer and business behaviour.
"What we've personally lived through, in particular relatively, recently, affects us beyond this recession. So having, for example, lived through the current recent financial crisis, we kind of calibrated that a then 30-year-old will start to significantly shy away from any stock market investment. Over time this effect will fade, it will go away. But it is rather slowly. So only about 30 years later, so when this person is 60-year-old, we will be back to a situation where this person acts towards the stock market the same way she would have acted if the financial crisis never had happened."
