This is the painting as Uccello would have presented it to Lionardo. And this is the way to see it by candlelight it makes the gold and silver glitter so the whole painting's like a huge jewel. I think he would have been very pleased with it, Lionardo, very pleased.
In 1474, Paolo Uccello, aged 77, made a tax declaration in which he declared himself old, infirm, unable to work, and burdened with a sick wife. In reality, he was reasonably well off, and probably partaking in the Italian tradition of tax avoidance. The following year, Uccello died. But the story of the paintings that he had created was far from over. Lionardo Bartolini Salimbeni died not long after Uccello. He bequeathed the San Romano paintings to two of his youngest sons, Damiano and Andrea, who had them taken to their country house in the Florentine hills.
