It's been decided by David Pountney to as well put it together with mainline Wagner, and David Pountney joins me from Cardiff. David, it's an interesting thing. What we heard there of course is Wagner imagining. He's trying to finish a last opera, which he never gets round to. What's the thesis of the whole thing.
Well, it's a vision if you like by the composer, Jonathan Harvey of Wagner in his dying moments recalling this ambition to write an opera on the Buddha which is true we know that he did have that plan. And that becomes enmeshed really with the attempt by the Buddhists' philosophy to navigate Wagner's transition as they would see it from this world into the next one, you know which as you know the Buddhists in a quite different way to, the way that we traditionally understand that. And I think what's really fascinating about it is that it's a 21st century composer using 21st century means to create a sound world that is actually quite closely related to Wagner's although there's no quoting or parody or pastiche of Wagner at all. But Jonathan's life-long preoccupation was, I think to find the music for the afterlife experience.
