Many people might think that, seeing how many historians come each year to Florence, that everything has been discovered, everything has been seen, everything read. But this isn't the case. Doing some research on Donatello, I stumbled upon a document from 1495.
The document revealled that the San Romano paintings were originally commissioned by a wealthy Florentine banker, whose name had been largely lost to history, Lionardo Bartolini Salimbeni.
The Salimbenis are from Sienna, and we even have two members of the family mentioned by Dante, who put them in hell among the squanderers, and I must say, some of us never quite lost the habit, unfortunately. They started as merchants and small-time bankers but one century later, more or less when the Uccello paintings were commissioned, the family had made quite a fortune, they owned the whole block of buildings near Piazza Santa Trinita.
