"Now it's increasingly the front yard of the city. People don't ignore it. More and more people come down to it. This is the 24th annual LA River cleanup we figure. At this point we've cleaned up and taken out about a million pounds of trash out of the LA River."
Many of the discarded items that find their way to the river are surprising, says John Dubler, a volunteer from the nearby Disney Company.
"We find snack bags and clothing. It's amazing, some of the things you see, little CDs."
Jack Lebic, a volunteer, says one item stands out.
"Tons and tons of plastic bags. I think that's the number one. And they're buried underneath here."
It's a yearly effort that's paying off, with a river that once again is starting to look like a river.洛杉矶河不再是这座城市丑陋的后院了,1986年成立了“洛杉矶河之友”组织的诗人Lewis MacAdams说。
