Normally once the ghost pavement had done its job, it was painted over and forgotten. But Uccello couldn't resist reminding himself of the satisfactions of perspective by hinting at the grid with broken lances and patches of grass. He was an artist, who according to his first biographer Giorgio Vasari, was obsessed, haunted, almost driven mad by the new science of perspective. Getting into bed late one evening, he even sighed to his neglected wife, "Ah, what a sweet thing this perspective is". Sweet she may have been but she was demanding of her lover's time. Uccello's drawings, experiments in foreshortening, show what painstaking work went even into small details. A single circular hat, or mazzocco, is made up of hundreds of interlocking geometric shapes. The San Romano paintings contain half-a-dozen examples of these mazzocchi.
