Some critics rate The Great Gatsby the best American novel of the 20th century. Yet when Fitzgerald died in 1940, his reputation had almost collapsed. Vincent Dell has been speaking to two people with strong family connections to Scott Fitzgerald.
The lines are Shakespeare's. The voice on a recording made in 1939 is that of F Scott Fitzgerald.

A year after reciting from Othello, Fitzgerald was dead at the age of 44. The recording could've been the idea of Sheilah Graham, an English-born print and radio journalist, who was his lover for the last three and a half years of his life.
"Fitzgerald was the love of my mother's life. And although she lived for another 50 years, relationships that she had after that were not nearly as important."
