You could dissect it and every cut, every angle, every positioning was clearly chosen. It was pointed and it did something. And in that way, Hitchcock demonstrated what directing was. Someone made the film, and it was the director. And the French loved that idea probably because they wanted to be film directors. And I think the English attitude was “Well, he’s just a terrific professional, a bit of a tease, rather droll. But come on. Let’s keep our feet on the ground.”
We are now on the air.
The canonisation of Hitchcock by the French New Wave culminated in one of the more extraordinary encounters in the history of the cinema, when critic and director Francois Truffaut embarked on an interview with his hero that lasted for over 50 hours. Part interrogation, part act of homage, Truffaut with collaborator Helen Scott acting his interpreter, led Hitchcock step by step through his life and career. Disarmed by Truffaut’s affectionate respect, the director put aside the Hitch persona and went further than he had ever done before in revealing the real Alfred Hitchcock.
