        《圣罗马诺的战役:契阿尔达被杀下马》表现了锡耶纳指挥官契阿尔达被佛罗伦萨的军官杀下马的情形;《圣罗马诺的战役:抵抗米切雷托·达·勾提尼欧拉.》表现的是佛罗伦萨城解围,佛罗伦萨军队在锡耶纳军队在度阿诺河时发起反攻,大败锡耶纳军队。

Condottieri took their names from the condotte, the contracts. But they were literally contractors, soldiers for hiremercenaries. These contracts were written out and were then torn in half, in a specific way, so the two halves could be joined back together, so in case of future dispute, you could prove that the two halves of the contract matched.
Being a mercenary was a respectable and potentially lucrative career. The San Romano paintings portray three of the most famous mercenary generals of the day in the thick of the action. In the centre of the London panel rides Niccolo da Tolentino, Florence's captain general. In the Paris panel is his comrade in arms, Micheletto Attendolo, riding to his aid.对佛罗伦斯这种新兴城邦而言,解决之道是掏腰包雇人来帮你打仗。于是他们转而聘请唯利是图的佣兵。意大利文中的“佣兵”这个字来自“合约”,这些佣兵说穿了就是打仗的包商,双方签订合约后,把合约撕成两半,一人一半,日后若有争执时,就能证明这是最原始的合约。当时的佣兵是个受人敬重,颇有赚头的行业,当时最有名的三位佣兵将军的身影出现在“圣罗马诺的战役”的激战里。在伦敦那幅画中央的是尼可洛塔伦提议,他是佛罗伦斯的总司令,巴黎那幅画的主角,是他赶来支援的同胞米凯勒托艾谭杜罗。
