Shirley received a good education from the British school system. She enjoyed the years she lived with her grandmother. Her family in Barbados was a strong, organized group that believed in education. Shirley always remembered the words her grandmother spoke.
"When I was reared in the British West Indies my grandmother used to always tell me, you may not be loved by certain forces in a society and you have to understand why. But always speak the truth."雪莉的父母虽然贫穷，但是仍希望他们的女儿能得到良好的教育，过上更好的生活。所以当雪莉三岁的时候她父母把她和她的妹妹们送到住在巴巴多斯的奶奶家生活。
雪莉在巴巴多斯的家庭是一个强盛的、有组织性的、崇尚教育的团体。在英式教育系统下雪莉接受了良好的教育，她非常喜欢和奶奶一起生活的日子。雪莉一直都记得那些奶奶说过的话。
她说：“当我在大不列颠西印度群岛长大时，我奶奶曾经一直告诫我，你可能不被社会上的某些人所喜欢，但是你必须知道为什么。最重要的是永远要说真话。”
