And so, of course, success breeds success. Techies from around the world are pouring into this area, because they know they'll find like-minded souls. The question, for London, Berlin, Jakarta and Sao Paulo - can the conditions and culture that led to Silicon Valley's rise be replicated? I went to speak to Jennifer Moses, a one-time advisor to former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and now here in San Francisco, a partner in Ed-Mentor, a venture capital firm that invests in education technology. I asked her what it is about the climate here in San Francisco that enabled innovation to thrive.
"In the Bay Area in particular, although I think more and more you'll find this in New York and other places, it is not considered a scandal to fail. It is an acceptable part of the process. And so whether it's young people coming straight out of university who don't feel compelled to go into banking or consulting, they want to do a start-up. And they're not worried if it's going to fail. They don't think that's gonna be the end of their careers. They know they're gonna be able to get up and do something after. And that culture that permits and encourages exploration, innovation, trying something new, taking risk, is really exciting.
