"What is the inflation rate in Argentina?"
"I mean that we don't have really really an accurate idea of how much is it. At the same time, I mean it's not that a big problem."
"Well, give me a picture then, I mean, how many violent crimes you normally deal with in a year in this area?"
"No. No, I don't have those numbers to hand just now. There is another department which I think should be able to help you and have them, but I don't."
"We don't have the numbers, the real numbers. But we feel what is happening, you know."
But with such a wide-ranging lack of reliable statistics, not everyone is sharing that feeling. You see the numbers do seem to show that Argentina has enjoyed something of an economic miracle in recent years. Emerging in 2001 from a financial crisis, it defied the world, defaulted on its debts, and despite bankruptcy and turmoil, bounced back to enjoy a decade of stability and close to double-digit growth.
