It was the artistic vibrancy of Renaissance Florence that provided a vital platform for the man who created this masterpiece.By the time Botticelli was born in the 1440s, Florence had been in the forefront of artistic endeavour for really the past 40 or 50 years, a kind of cradle of a new way of painting, what we now refer to as the early Renaissance, and Botticelli was born right as this was reaching its peak.
Sandro Botticelli was born around 1444 in central Florence, just two doors down from the famous church of the Ognissanti. The name "Botticelli" suggests "little barrel" - a nickname probably inherited from a portly elder brother. Sandro's father was a tanner, a struggling artisan more interested in making ends meet than advances in painting. But an early aptitude for the decorative arts saved Botticelli from entering the family business, and he was sent to train as a goldsmith - a normal grounding for a jobbing painter.
