The death of the nurse who answered a prank call from Sydney radio show hosts Mel Greig and Michael Christian is leading the news in Australia.
"Good evening. Sydney radio station 2Day FM is tonight at the centre of a firestorm."
"Good evening. First tonight, what started off as a prank phone call to the Duchess of Cambridge's hospital has taken a tragic and extremely sad turn. "
The apparent suicide of nurse Jacintha Saldanha has led to a backlash against 2Day FM. The chief executive of the station's parent company is Rhys Holleran.
"Every one of us are deeply saddened. We are incredibly sad for the family. And that's the focus. Prank calls as a craft in radio have been going for decades and decades. And, you know, no one could reasonably have foreseen what ended up being an incredibly tragic and very sad day for us."
The station has suspended its advertising and taken the presenters who posed as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles off the air until further notice.
