Rope was the antithesis of Hitchcock's tried-and-trusted montage method. Rather than being made from the assembly of small pieces of film, it was shot in continuous ten-minute takes, the length of a single reel of film. To achieve this, the massive Technicolor camera had to be able to roam at will through a specially designed set crowded with actors, technicians, props, and equipment.
Undeterred by Rope's disappointing box office performance, Hitchcock pushed on with plans for Under Capricorn to be shot at Elstree studios in England.
