【我们说的英语】Is silence golden?(4/6)

A noisy street scene in Bangkok, Thailand

In this week's programme, we talk about noise and its opposite: peace and quiet.
Living in a city can be a noisy experience. Some people find the sounds comforting, while others move to the countryside to get away from it all. But even those who seek tranquillity can never find complete silence.
Rob and Finn discuss solutions to the problem of noise as well as words and phrases related to the subject.

Maybe we should all take a vow of silence! Just like a monk, we make a promise not to talk.
I think that would be impossible for you Rob! Anyway, what rich people used to do in history was move out of the city to the relative tranquillity of the countryside, but then there the silence was deafening!
And when you're in the country, you sometimes tune in to the smallest sounds, like a bird singing, and that can become just as irritating. But you have to admit those sounds are a lot more calming than the constant noise of city life?
Well you can sometimes hear birdsong in the city but it's the buildings that cause these natural sounds to be drowned out.
High rise buildings cause the sound to reflect off – or bounce off - each other causing the sound to be amplified – made louder. And buildings made of glass are even more reflective.
