And at time when other European cities even Vienna seemed the best ambivalent towards his music. "My Praguers understand me." He's reported to have said.
Prague then, was a place of undoubted musical taste. True only a handful of home-grown Czech composers seemed to have made their careers there, but as we'll hear, there were many like Mozart from farther afield who found the city very receptive to their talents.
One of them you may be surprised to hear was Guillaume de Machaut. We're going back a few years from Mozart of course. Machaut was born in the early 1300s near Rheims, and was arguably the most famous musician of his day, champion of the so-called Ars Nova movement, and the cutting edge of new techniques and styles. From his early 20s, he was employed as secretary to Count John of Luxembourg who was also King of Bohemia. And for almost 25 years, Machaut accompanied the royal party on all sorts of trips and military expeditions. We don't know exactly how long he spent in Prague, but the city would certainly have been important to him and part of his musical life.
Today we think of Prague as the capital of the Czech Republic, but historically it's probably better to think of it as the central city of Bohemia that diamond-shaped region in the heart of Europe that's long provided the sort of crossroads between the predominantly German world to the West, and Slavic world to the East.“布拉格以前从未感受过如是震撼。”
