HITNS:

But in a piecemeal way, it has suffered similar attacks - a divide-and-conquer process from which Flora has emerged as the Primavera poster-child.
The expression on Flora's face is quite unique. It's strange. It's penetrating and suggestive. What is the message that Flora is trying to convey to us? She's drilling us with her eyes.
Women aren't supposed to look out boldly from a picture. They're supposed to look down. And she strides forward with much more composure than the other figures. And she acts as the figure who draws us into the picture itself.
Flora herself fascinated me over the years. I had as a prised possession a close-up of Flora's face on my wall from the Ufizi for decades. I studied it and studied it and tried to decipher what it was that was strange about this face. Finally I realised that it's a fusion of two different personalities, on the one hand a refined and aristocratic woman of the Renasissance, on the other a debased and prostituted character, perhaps androgynous, or even transvestite.
