But this particular fat man was BS Johnson, one of the most innovative stylists in post-war British writing, and author of "The Unfortunates", the 1969 novel, presented in a box from which most of the chapters could be read in any order the reader chose. Underappreciated in his own lifetime, Johnson committed suicide 40 years ago. But his standing has been raised in recent years by literary fans including the novelist Jonathan Coe, who wrote a biography of Johnson in 2004. But Johnson didn't just write. He also made films, many of them as experimental and subversive as his writing. And the British Film Institute has now re-issued them as a complete DVD set. They range from a nine-minute monologue spoken in an imaginary language by a naked man, via a biography of Samuel Johnson to a slapstick farce protesting against Ted Heath's industrial policy. Radio 3's very own Ian McMillan has always been an admirer of Johnson and he's down the line in Leeds and with me here is literary critic Julia Jordan of Cardiff University.
Julia, the term experimental cultural writer is always used about BS Johnson. Could you just tell us what does that mean?
Sure. Well, the first thing to say is that BS Johnson hated the word experimental. He said that it was almost always a synonym for unsuccessful. And he did his experiments in private.
