Exactly the same thing happened when the Japanese soldiers committed the atrocities at Nanking in China. They said they were just ordered to do that. The Nazis were the same in the concentration camps, so those things are inside our psyche. I interviewed many victims of sarin gas attack and some of those people said, if they were ordered to do the same thing, they could have done it. They said that, those victims. It's in the psyche. It's horrible.
Murakami's increasing sense of responsibility towards his people has led him down one of the darkest avenues of Japan's history. The Yasukuni Shinto Shrine here in central Tokyo is a rallying point for Japan's right-wingers, and consequently a symbol for liberals like Murakami of Japan's unwillingness to face up to its past, particularly its troubled relationship with China, where Japanese soldiers committed some of the most horrific wartime atrocities.
