It's late September 1983, Northern Ireland and a group of prisoners, all members of the IRA or Irish Republican Army, are on the run. They've escaped from Europe's most secure jail, the Maze.
The biggest prison escape in Northern Ireland's history has led to one of the most intensive searches ever seen here as every available soldier and policeman was called in, along with helicopters and police dogs.
It was a huge, huge, huge operation. It's probably one of the biggest IRA operations in the history of the conflict.
Prisoner Brendan "Bik" McFarlane was committed to the fight for independence from British rule. He was serving a life sentence for his part in a gun and bomb attack against a unionist pub in Belfast. Five were killed and another 60 people were injured. In prison he continued his IRA activities and when the escape plan was hatched, Bik was at the forefront.
Only very very few people were aware of this here because of the potential for a, you know, what we termed as loose talk and being overheard. So it was kept very very tight.
