Women's eggs and men's sperm have arguably become commodities like any other to be bought and sold. This programme looks at some of the ways that's happening and who is profiting. The fertility industry has to deal with tight regulation in some Western countries. It's also benefited from the trend for working women to start their families later when they might have more problems conceiving. One example: if a woman can no longer produce her own healthy eggs, she might go to a clinic which offers donated eggs. In some countries, the law allows the women who provide these eggs to be paid for their services. The eggs are fertilised by the husband's sperm and then implanted into the childless woman. It seems egg donors from some ethnic backgrounds may be able to demand higher payments because of the scarcity value. I spoke to Amanda Segal of International Patient Services at the Shady Grove Fertility Reproductive Science Center near Washington DC. And I asked her what's been happening to demand.
"The demand is actually quite excessive. And adoption being so hard to come by, especially internationally, they found that with donor egg, there's still a part of their partner. So if they're using their partner's sperm, then at least they have control over that. And they get to carry their child."
