"So my campaign is about the 100% in America, and I'm concerned about them. I'm concerned about the fact that over the past four years life has become harder for Americans."
Mr. Romney's been on the defensive after the release of a secretly-recorded video from a fundraiser in May showed him with a dismissive attitude toward Obama supporters.
Mr. Romney said 47% of voters will support the president no matter what because they depend on government handouts and see themselves as victims.
President Obama responded on the David Letterman show.
"When I meet Republicans as I'm traveling around the country, they are hard-working family people who care deeply about this country and my expectation is that if you want to be president you gotta work for everybody, not just for some."
Analysts say the Romney comments are damaging, at least in the short term. Presidential historian Allan Lichtman.

分析人士称，至少就眼前来看，罗姆尼的评论（对其自身的选举）很具破坏性。
总统历史学家艾伦•利特曼说：“他在假定人们可以私下说事上犯了重大错误。我们都知道，在当今这个时代里，每件事都能被拍摄和录制下来，所以你无法将半数受抚养的美国人不纳税的事实轻易勾销。”
