HITNS:

The interest of the Florentine neo-Platonists in particualry was primarily in Plato's philosophy of love. Love is the impulse as it were, divine love is the most important of the divine impulses which stimulate humanity and it's development which could have the affect of directing the soul back towards unity with God.
You could read into the painting a progression of the human soul, moving from base, carnal love, through civilised, human love, to divine love. The extremes represented Zephyr, descending on the one side and Mercury, reascending on the other.
The sense that we've been invited to decipher a riddle or to reflect upon an enigma is, I think, one of the most powerful aspects of the Primavera's enduring appeal it's, in a sense, offering us a work not just of aesthetic beauty, but also an intellectual beauty.
