But in recent years, gang culture in Britain has grown alarmingly. Not so long ago, a minister compared the situation in corners of our cities to the lawless dystopia of America's TV drama "The Wire". Birmingham has produced a long running feud between two rival gangs of young black men, the Burger Bar Boys and the Johnson Crew with many fatal shootings and stabbings resulting, including the murder of two teenage girls in a drive-by shooting in 2003. The filmmaker Penny Woolcock spent many years gaining the trust of gang members on either side of the divide. And in a new documentary "One Mile Away", she charts the attempt by two of the young men to end the violence with a mini peace process.
A clip from the documentary "One Mile Away", a blend of tough social realism and rap music performed by the young man has already secured a major documentary award for the film, so when I met Penny Woolcock, I wanted to know why two groups from neighbouring postcodes were fighting each other in the first place.
Apparently, when it started in the 90s, so a group of guys used to hang around Johnsons fish bar, another group who hung around the burger bar who were known as Burger Bar Boys. And they fell out, and there was an altercation. Somebody died and they then somehow became known as the Burgers and the Johnsons, so nobody's really clear about how it started exactly but that there was some quarrel. And people who are fighting now don't really know what history of it is then.
