Parliament is deeply divided on the issue. Some lawmakers have walked out of meetings in protest. The church has voiced its opposition to divorce and unmarried couples living together.
One term of the bill would make it illegal to demand a return of the so-called "bride price" when couples divorce. This is a payment a man's family makes to the family of the woman he is to marry.婚姻法案禁止了多项婚姻中的传统习惯行为。法案还要求离婚时财产进行公平分配。这项法案赋予了同居者共同享有财产权，并把婚内强奸定性为犯罪。
