The attempt to find a key linking all of the figures in the painting has led some experts away from matters of the heart to the concerns of the mind, and in particular, to the philosophy of Plato. We know that Lorenzo the Magnificent would bring together the best minds of his day to talk about poetry, politics and philosophy, particularly the works of Plato, which were newly translated. Some argue that aspects of Platonic debate are made visual in The Primavera.
I don't think that we should see Botticelli as someone who put on a toga and went to the great intellectual forum and could exchange in that way, because he didn't even have the languages, but he knew these things were important to work with, and I think he was genuinely interested in them, and was able to understand what they were about on a certain level, and how to give them pictorial form.
