They transport, between them, 90% of the world's trade. And once these mighty vessels' natural lives are over, the unwanted ships need to be scrapped. It's no mean task, and indeed, no clean task when you're talking about an oil-drenched monster weighing, in some cases, up to half a million tonnes. Nearly all of the ships end up in scrapyards in Asia. And breaking up old ships has become a billion-dollar industry in one country - Bangladesh. It's been roaring ahead since restrictions there were eased last year. But questions persist about the cost to the local environment. The BBC's Anbarasan Ethirajan has been given rare access to one of the ship-breaking yards near the southern port city of Chittagong.
I'm now on the Shitakunda beach in southeastern Bangladesh. I can see old and broken ships all around this place. There are huge bulk carriers, container ships and even some oil tankers. This place is being described as the graveyard of ships. As unwanted ships reach the coastal area of Bangladesh, then they send a specialised team to beach these ships during high tide.
