Ozon's 8 Women was an all-star murder mystery, his Angel, a freely adaptation, of an Elizabeth Taylor novel, his Under the Sand, a melancholy thriller full of adoring shots, of Charlotte Rampling. His new picture, In the House, is a work of comparative restraint, a black comedy of sorts about a school teacher who cultivates the literary talents of a young student, the student working on an autobiographical story about a cruel opportunistic friendship, with a classmate. The film critic Ginette Vincendeau has seen the film and is with me now.
Ginette, it's a bit of teaser this film, isn't it? The teacher and his wife played by Kristin Scott Thomas become almost addicted to this boy's story. But we never really know how much of it is true, do we?
No, but it, it's really a film about the power of storytelling, and the mystery of it, and we start from a very banal situation of, of a teacher setting an essay to students, saying, you know, write about your best, your best friend and what happens in his, his house.
