It's a terribly violent story, this horrific scene of a woman being torn to pieces by dogs. It's the last scene that you'd imagine today for a young couple to commission for their wedding chamber, and yet that's exactly what we see in 1483, painted by Botticelli.
But this tale of canine carnage has a happy ending. ln the final scene of the series, the blood has been mopped up, and a marriage celebration is taking place. ln the Primavera, too, violence is transformed into happiness. Pursuing the original fable to its end, we find Zephyr, overcome by shame, taking Flora as his wife. She, as her smile suggests, is a contented bride. She has no cause to complain, the fable tells us, of her marriage bed.
