I wanted to write about sheep in the first place. It was 25 years ago. I wanted to write about a sheep, so I thought, what kind of a story could I write about a sheep? So I just wanted to see a sheep, so I went to Hokkaido. You know, the sheep is not a popular animal in Japan. So if you want to see the sheep, you got to go to Hokkaido. So I saw the sheep, and I, yeah, I think, oh yeah, I can write something about sheep.
I run a small guest house, and we also have a sheep farm here in northern Hokkaido. Our guests can touch and play with the sheep on our farm. One of Murakami's early books, which has since become very famous, is A Wild Sheep Chase. Some of the locations for the book are in northern Hokkaido. And when you look at the details, it fits exactly with the area of Niubu where we live.
